Since their inception, JGB SHIBUKI has been inspired by their surroundings in Western New York. The thunderous sounds of taiko drumming call to mind a nearby natural wonder: Niagara Falls. The word しぶき ("shibuki") means "splash" in Japanese and is inspired by the roar of the falls. The "JGB" in JGB SHIBUKI stands for Japanese Group of Buffalo, which the drummers are all members of. The taiko drummers range in age, skill levels and backgrounds, and each makes their own splash on the drums, each contributing their part to the whole sound.
JGB SHIBUKI play a variety Japanese taiko drum songs in ensemble form. They perform in the Western NY region at various events including Elmwood Festival of the Arts, Buffalo Cherry Blossom Festival, Music Is Art Festival, and Japan Culture Day. The group has been playing together since 2016, and practices on a weekly basis.
Those who have seen and heard live taiko performances often describe it as a powerful experience, and an emotional response is not unusual when confronted with the primal beats of Japanese drumming.
